很難得地，今年的諾貝爾物理學獎不是頒給什麼艱澀難懂的高深物理理論，而是兩個對現代社會極會重要的物理應用：光纖及 CCD 感光器。諾貝爾獎的新聞稱三位得獎者為「光的大師」，其中獲得光纖那一半的殊榮的，是華裔科學家，同時也是中研院院士的高錕。高錕在 1966 年時計算出了如果玻璃夠純淨的話，光訊號可以傳輸遠達 100 公里。當時的技術僅能製作出可傳輸 20 公里遠的光纖，但受到高錕研究的鼓舞，許多研究學者投入這個領域，使得四年後的 1970 年就出現了可以傳輸 100 公里的光纖。直到今天，我們可以說整個網路的骨幹都是靠光纖才能架設起來的。
